Learning at Woodhaven Middle School

Woodhaven students develop 21st century skills such as critical thinking and problem solving both in the classroom and throughout our learning environment each and every day. Staff at Woodhaven Middle School have recently begun implementing “Thinking Routines” with our students as we continue to model that we are all learners, capable of deep and meaningful thinking within our classrooms.

At Woodhaven Middle School we realize that academic growth occurs at different rates for different students. It is with this in mind that we provide various supports through a Response to Intervention model for our students. Programs like “Precision Reading” and Numeracy Groups are just two of the intensive supports available for students who require additional support for their learning. Other supports such as Homework Help, Escorted Intervention and Mentorship provide the necessary assistance to other students who require additional help to reach learning goals.

At Woodhaven Middle School we have a focus on supporting the health of our students. It is with this in mind that Daily Physical Education, provided by a team of dedicated Physical Education Teachers, is a core component of our daily structure. Purposeful physical activity, skill development and a focus on cooperation are at the core of our Physical Education Program.

We also recognize that emotional well-being and mental health are critical to student success. As such, our school counselor and our connections with community partners such as FCSS and Children’s Mental Health work to support students and families in this regard.

Supports at Woodhaven Middle School

Our students are provided with the resources necessary to help them navigate through the challenges they face as middle years learners. Students are held to a high standard of citizenship within our learning community and are supported as they develop their citizenship skills.

We access many resources both within our school and in our community to support our students. Some of these are:

  • An on-site counsellor
  • An Inclusive Education Lead Teacher
  • A school-based support team
  • Children’s Mental Health
  • Community Partnerships
    • Family and Community Support Services (FCSS)
    • RCMP Liaison Officer
    • Big Brothers, Big Sisters
    • Mentorship Programs

The staff of Woodhaven Middle School work tirelessly to create a learning community through the wide range of activities we offer within our school. We recognize that students with a positive connection within our school are more likely to be happy and successful students.

At Woodhaven Middle School there are activities intended to meet the diverse interests of all types of middle school students, such as:

  • Chess club
  • Golf Club
  • Show Choir
  • Glee Club
  • Art Club
  • Spring League and Fall Ball
  • Sevec Exchanges
  • Vancouver Sun Run
  • Triple Threat Theatre

These activities are just a few of the ways we try to make a connection with each student within our learning community.

Woodhaven Gives Back

At Woodhaven Middle School, we know that our students have a role not only in our learning community, but also as citizens within a larger local, national and global community.

It is with this in mind that our “Woodhaven Connects” program provides purposeful, developmentally-appropriate opportunities for our students to give back to their community and to further develop their citizenship and social responsibility.

Past initiatives have included the following activities:

  • Grade 5 students making Christmas cards for members of the Spruce Grove community
  • Woodhaven partnering with MADD and the RCMP on their drinking and driving paper bag campaign
  • Grade 9 students raising funds for the Jack Davis Hope Foundation and working at Inner City Shelters in Edmonton
