Felix (Fil) Fraser was born in 1932 in Montreal, of Canadian and Caribbean parentage. He was a major force in radio broadcasting and news production. In 1965, Fraser moved to Edmonton to work with the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission. Warm, engaging, and up to speed with news of the day, he soon moved back into broadcasting, co-anchoring CBC Edmonton's supper-hour news and ITV's Fil Fraser Show. His talk show was the station's highest-rated, which led to a position as producer/host on Newsmakers, a weekly public affairs program. He was also avidly involved in humanitarian work. From 1989 to 1992, he led the Alberta Human Rights Commission, vowing to make it more proactive. He fought to have their lawyers take on Aryan Nations cross-burning group to court, and to have sexual orientation protected under Alberta's human-rights act. When he was named a member of the Order of Canada in 1991, he was officially recognized as Canada's first black broadcaster by the office of the Governor-General.
Last Tuesday, Premier Kenny announced that starting today masks will no longer be required for students to wear in schools. I say students, because, for the next few weeks at least, your teachers, EAs, and other support staff will still be required to wear masks. Now I know for some of you, this is wonderful news, and I know for some of you it makes you feel a little anxious or nervous. And that’s okay. Whether you choose to wear, or not wear, a mask on Monday is a decision you need to make with your parents.
However, it is still strongly recommended that you wear your masks to keep yourself, your classmates, your teachers and your EAs safe.
But what we all must do, is respect the decisions of our classmates and their parents. What cannot happen, what myself and all the adults here at Woodhaven will not allow to happen, is for students to have these decisions to be challenged by their classmates. The adults here will support your decision whether you chose to wear a mask or not. What we will not tolerate is you or your classmates taunting, teasing, or pressuring others to wear a mask or not wear a mask.
There is more than enough room with thin the ‘Pack for different opinions and beliefs, what makes the ‘Pack so great is that we together are strong enough to take on almost everything. Above all, perhaps our greatest value is to Happy Valentine's Day!
