Black History Month - Black History of Alberta
Hazel Proctor was born in 1930, went to school in Edmonton, and began working there before moving to Calgary. Her father’s roots were in Ohio; her grandmother was part of the Oklahoma trek which settled in Amber Valley. Her father worked as a coal miner and then a porter; these were strenuous jobs that kept him away from his family for very long periods of time. Proctor worked for and became involved in the community outreach of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, promoting diversity, which was inclusive of Indigenous organizations. As leader of the Alberta Association for the Advancement of Colored People (AAACP), she dealt with discrimination and systemic racism faced by black parents in public schools, swimming pools, dance halls, and other public places. A community leader and activist, Proctor belonged to several women’s organizations. She also had an extensive singing career and regularly performed her jazz and blues music at venues throughout Calgary.

Witness an act of kindness? Give them a "link" in the giant paper chain we will be making in the plaza! Students will be by during block 7 all this week to collect class chains!

Tomorrow is Pink Shirt Day. That’s right, tomorrow is the day we all wear a pink shirt to raise awareness about bullying prevention and healthy relationships.
The original event was organized in 2007 by twelfth-grade students David Shepherd and Travis Price of Nova Scotia, who bought and distributed 50 pink shirts after a ninth-grade student Chuck McNeill was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt during the first day of school at Central Kings Rural High School in Cambridge, Nova Scotia.[2][3] I hope you’ll join everyone in wearing pink to lift each other up.
