Wednesday June 21
For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year and a new season of life.. On June 21, for National Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize and celebrate the history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada. In just a moment we will be playing the Cree Sunrise Song. Loosely translated into English, the song sings:
Wake up! The sun is coming.
The birds are already singing
How beautiful this land of ours is. As we listen to the song, please take the time to reflect upon the many indigenous groups that have called this country their home for centuries. Please join me in removing your hats and standing for the playing of the Cree sunrise song.
