It’s back!!!!!!!!!!!! After a 2 year break, Woodhaven Performing Arts is ready to get back on stage!!! If you are a grade 8 or 9 student that was a part of Treasure Island, Mrs Refugia needs your help! Please meet in the Drama Room during the 2nd half of lunch today!

It was a busy weekend of basketball…and our teams did awesome! Our junior A boys and girls competed in the Prescott tournament….and the Junior A girls team won! Our senior teams hosted the inaugural Woodhaven Hoops Classic…our senior boys finished 6th, senior girls 3rd. A big thanks to all students and staff that made the weekend a success! It was so great to see so many spectators in the gyms this weekend!

This week marks the start of our Junior A basketball playoffs. Our Junior A boys kick things off tonight after school at Muir Lake. Our Junior A girls play Wednesday right here at Woodhaven.

Basketball practices today after school include…Junior B girls and Senior girls in the large gym…senior boys in the small gym.

Skating continues this week in all PE classes. Please check the skating schedule to see when your class is scheduled to go to the rink!

WE DID IT! Last week 7A & B challenged the school to commit 450 Acts of Kindness. That’s one act for every staff and student as Woodhaven and we succeeded! In total, 458 links were added to the chain in the Plaza. That’s 458 links in just 4 days! Over 100 Acts of Kindness a day! While the challenge is over, we still encourage everyone to continue recognizing and committing acts of kindness around our school and beyond.

Black History Month - Black History of Alberta

Virnetta Anderson was born in Monticello, Arkansas on October 29, 1920. She completed high school in Hot Springs and advanced education at the A.M. and N. College and the Metropolitan School of Business in Los Angeles. Anderson migrated to Calgary in 1952 after her husband, Ezzrett “Sugarfoot” Anderson, was recruited by the Calgary Stampeders. Over the decades she was actively engaged in the church, charities, and in the broader community. Anderson served on many boards, including the United Way, Calgary Tourism, and the Calgary Centre for the Performing Arts. She was a co-founder of, and served as president of Meals on Wheels. In 1974 she was elected to Calgary City Council, becoming the first Black alderwoman in the city and the province. Anderson served on the Calgary City Council from 1974-1977. After her term ended, she was appointed by then Mayor Ralph Klein to serve on his Citizen Advisory Committee. In 1988, she was named the Paul Harris Fellow by Calgary’s Rotary Club. In September 2020, the Calgary City Council honoured Anderson by naming the newly renovated great hall after her - the “Virnetta Anderson Hall”.
