Black History Month - Black History of Alberta

Born in Maidstone, Saskatchewan and spending the majority of his life here in Alberta, Douglas Harper was a light-heavyweight boxer. Between 1947 and 1953, he fought 33 times and developed a distinctive style based on left jabs and power shots with his right hand. On November 17, 1953, Harper beat Yvon Durelle to win the Canadian light-heavyweight title. In 2017, Douglas received an honourary lifetime champion award from the Canadian Professional Boxing Council. After retiring from the ring in 1961, he returned to Amber Valley and lived a quiet life farming his land and contributing to his community.

Yesterday, Premier Kenny announced that starting this Monday masks will no longer be required for students to wear in schools.   I say students, because, for the next few weeks at least, your teachers, EAs, and other support staff will still be required to wear masks.  Now I know for some of you, this is wonderful news, and I know for some of you it makes you feel a little anxious or nervous.  And that’s okay.  Whether you choose to wear, or not wear, a mask on Monday is a decision you need to make with your parents.

But what we all must do on Monday, and for the weeks following, is respect the decisions of our classmates and their parents.  What cannot happen, what myself and all the adults here at Woodhaven will not allow to happen, is for students to have these decisions to be challenged by their classmates.  The adults here will support your decision whether you chose to wear a mask or not.  What we will not tolerate is you or your classmates taunting, teasing, or pressuring others to wear a mask or not wear a mask.

There is more than enough room with thin the ‘Pack for different opinions and beliefs, what makes the ‘Pack so great is that we together are strong enough to take on almost everything.  Above all, perhaps our greatest value is to respect ourselves and others.  And that will never change.

However, for today, we will be requiring you to wear your masks.  If you have any questions be sure to stop Ms. Enders or me at recess in the halls.

You beautiful people have the next four days off because of Teachers Convention, let’s have a great day to start you extend break off right…
